Meet Pieter-Jan, our new International Business Manager for ChargePlanner

With a pioneering platform already used in 6 countries and 24 more countries in the pipeline, ChargePlanner (a solution by RetailSonar) is at the breaking point of becoming the European market leader in location strategy for charging stations. Time for reinforcement! We spoke with our new colleague Pieter-Jan Criel, International Business Manager E-Mobility, about his passion for electric vehicles, his forecast and ideas for the sector.

What’s your background? And what made you excited for this job at RetailSonar?

Pieter-Jan: “I am an engineer driven by a passion for innovation and technology. In recent years, I have thrived as a consultant in the electric vehicle sector. Personally, I am a fervent advocate, having driven exclusively electric for over 5 years. The evolving energy landscape captivates me, fueling my fascination and dedication to this dynamic field.”

Can you briefly explain what Chargeplanner is?

“This solution focuses on location strategy for charging stations, both for slow charging and (ultra) fast charging, for cars and trucks. The platform integrates all relevant market data for e-mobility (traffic flows, local visitors, electric grid, competition, parking spots). Next, we have our state-of-the-art predictive models that can predict usage of existing and future charging points with the highest possible accuracy. This helps charging point operators all over Europe today to invest in the right locations.”

What else can we expect?

“We have a living product roadmap to further improve our data and methods. And we are rolling out the software towards 30 countries in Europe. Besides this, we are involved in an EFRO-project in which we help to shape the optimal European charging station network, starting with the province of Flanders.”

Sounds like a particularly challenging job! How did you experience your first months at RetailSonar?

“Very exciting and educational! RetailSonar employs highly driven and ambitious people with only one goal: to realize great projects as a team!”

Finally, a few personal questions:

How would you describe yourself in a few words?

“An epicurean and team player with a positive mindset.”

What are your hobbies?

"I love to go on trips with my camper (that listens to the name “Crielie Wheelie” when I rent him out), playing sports (tennis, pingpong, running & cycling, played soccer for 25 years but now worn out ..), quality time with my family, listening to music and visiting (rock) festivals.”

What is your favorite travel destination?

"I have a great affinity for Africa because I grew up in Congo with my 2 sisters. I love their 'joie de vivre' despite the poverty in which the vast majority of this population lives.”

What can we wake you up for at night?

“Tony Chocolonely's chocolate (caramel/sea salt is my favourite)! And an unexpected trip abroad.”
